The Importance of Following the ISO 14001 Standards at Home

ISO 14001 is essentially a set of environmental specifications to which companies should adhere, so as to protect our rapidly deteriorating environment. The politically correct name for them is Standards for Environmental Management Systems. They can also be followed by everybody at home. This is your chance to invest something important in your children's' future. We don't want future generations to live in a world that we destroyed by being lazy and careless, do we? So, if the ISO 14001 is a bit vague in your mind, let me refresh your memory?!

The ISO 14001 standards were set up at a global meeting between world powers in 1992. They are quite easy to follow and incorporate into your everyday life. Most organisations are already putting them into practice. Recent reports from the USA indicate that President Obama has passed a new executive order related to ISO 14001, specifically directed at federal governments. This order is to ensure that they pay serious attention to lowering all environmental emissions in their states - and from that, it is hoped that everybody will slowly start becoming more aware of this, and then start acting on it.

As they say in the classics, "charity begins at home". And in this case, so does caring about your environment. There are lots of different ways you can involve your family by contributing to this essential cause. Start discussions around the dinner table about ISO 14001 and tell your family it is all about "going green". It's fashionable to be green these days - it no longer refers to someone who is a nerd! And in business practice, it is becoming essential to be seen as a "green" company. Sending emails instead of hard copies by post saves paper, which saves our trees, which in turn contributes to keeping a naturally healthy ecological cycle functioning as nature intended it to.

At home, always remember that most leftover food can be turned into compost which then fertilizes your plants and trees. They in turn absorb harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. There are many simple and effective ways to help reduce your carbon footprint around the house. Get your children into the habit of doing everything they can to preserve our world. And remember, by doing your little bit at home, you will be part of a global movement set up by the ISO 14001 to start focussing on protecting our natural resources - isn’t that something to be proud of?
